The professional background of the character should now be determined. Initially this is just a phrase such as Doctor or Police Officer. The player should then choose four Specialities from the list on page twenty four as appropriate. These are the primary skills that the character has learned in their professional life, and all will add a +1RS to ability tests covered by that Speciality.

Some example backgrounds are:

Scientist : Science (choice), Science (choice), Computers, Investigation
Police Officer : Investigation, Weapons (club), Criminology, Driving
Bouncer : Martial Arts (striking), Local Knowledge, Martial Arts (grappling), Athletics
Taxi Driver : Driving, Local Knowledge, Mechanics, Business
Doctor : Medicine, Science (biology), Computers, Investigation
Soldier : Weapons (guns),Martial Arts (striking), Military, Athletics
Farmer : Science (agriculture), Driving, Local Knowledge, Weapons (guns)

Spoiler:
The vampires were first recorded in ancient Sumeria, and were thought to be demons in human form that preyed on man and beast alike. Although hunted down by most civilisations since, the vampires have managed to survive through the millennia by hiding in the shadows on the fringes of civilisation.

Vampires themselves are dead, although their soul is still retained within their body. To look at in daylight hours, a vampire is almost indistinguishable from a mortal human, although they have no pulse and they are not visible on camera or in a mirror. After dark, their eyes turn jet black and their incisor teeth lengthen to a sharp point.

Vampires, as most people know, drink the blood of the living. They are faster and stronger than a mortal human and feed by isolating their target prey and then attacking them either with teeth or a weapon and then drinking the subsequent bloodloss. Anyone drained of blood by a vampire will die, only to rise from the dead some 12 hours later as a vampire themselves. If a victim only loses some blood and survives, they will be ill for some time, but will thereafter be immune from becoming a vampire themselves.

Moreover, their blood will now taste foul to a vampire, and will provide no sustenance. It is therefore rare for a vampire to partially drain a victim.

[Nom du jeu] is a game of modern supernatural horror, where the player characters are the monsters. They are the vampires, werewolves and ghosts that give rise to modern and ancient legends and haunt the darkness. This is a game about confronting the monster and the darkness inside everyone. There are various supernatural types described in this book that can be used as player characters, and a description of various ways that the game can be played.

This game has been inspired by many sources, but three stand out. The obvious inspiration is the World of Darkness series of games by White Wolf and now Onyx Path Publishing which could be considered the original game of this type. However, the primary inspiration was the BBC TV series Being Human which explored the dichotomy of supernaturals attempting to be “normal” with both horror and humour and is highly recommended. The third major inspiration is the novella “The Skin Trade” by GRR Martin. A haunting and somewhat original take on the werewolf legend, this story is also highly recommended.
